Well I had to make my first review my favorite game. It's a truly incredible marvel of innovation in computer science.
This game is the sequel to the ground breaking game based off of the Quake 2 engine known as Half-Life(suprize, suprize). It was created by Valve Software under the instruction of Gabe Newell, who also supervized the first 3 Windows projects and a fellow Harvard dropout like Gates.
This complicated game puts you as the player and the character you play as in the same place(if you played the first one). You don't know where you are, when you are, and the last thing you remember is talking with the G-Man and getting shot up with something powerful.
The graphics in this game were a thing of legend but now since the release of Source HDR, they've gone beyond that. They're no Quake 4/Doom 3 stuff but hell, that's where the Cinematic Mod takes over.
Gameplay is much like the first Half-Life, meaning very streamlined and easy to learn. You spend a significant portion of the first part of the game without a gun and wondering(and eventually running) around. This will get you used to the control setup before your faithful friend Barney hands over your trusty crowbar that you left back at Black Mesa.
The storyline, I won't spoil. You start off on a train with a few others before arriving at the "end of the line" as decribed by one of the occupants. You are then paraded around in a Nazi like style until a suprize comes at you. I won't say anymore from there. I liked the story but some feel it lacked depth. Frankly I think it to be very clear and complicated.
All in all, this game is 100% worth it.
Recommended specs(my recommended)
x86-compatible 2.5Ghz Processor
512MB RAM(available, not total)
DirectX9 graphics card(I recommend the ATi X800 and up or the nVidia GeForce 6200 and up)
You'll also need plenty of hard drive space. HL2 takes up about 3.5Gigs.
