Chapter 3:
The young Meowth could hardly suppress the fanged grin that seemed impatient to come into play, as he saw the human’s figure sitting beneath the boughs of the only tree the island had to offer.
She was watching the stars he decided quite suddenly; why else would she be sat outside? Tilting his head curiously to one side as he looked the girl over the Meowth thought he recognised a few emotions swirl in her stormy eyes… sorrow and most definitely no small amount of anger. Though who could blame her, she had just been plucked from the life she knew so well to become his master’s servant.
Her eyes, they are very much like his… the small feline mused, an unwelcome frown pulling at his features. She isn’t happy, I should change that.
So it was in all his kittenish naïveté that the Meowth clone approached the young woman, who sat in a flurry of skirts, to try and cheer her up.
Liana was weary; the day had been trying on her both physically and mentally. One minute she had been sat in her small wooden boat admiring the ocean (even though she shouldn’t have been without a friend or one of the village guards), the next she had been whisked away by that mysterious creature to his island home.
~In return for my sparing your pitiful human life, you will work for me.~ he had said with an air of superior confidence. ~You shall do as you are told and your duties will be to aid in the well being of these Pokémon. You will not speak unless spoken to, you will not sleep, eat or drink without my say so, you will respect us and failure to do so will result in your death. This means of punishment shall also be used if you see fit to try and escape the island.~
Strangely enough Liana had not felt fear throughout that little speech, just a growing sense of annoyance at this creature’s high and mighty attitude. “Resistance is futile!” she had quipped.
~Yes, resistance is futile.~ The creature had replied obviously rather liking this turn of phrase.
He had then looked her over, wrinkling his pert, cat-like nose in disgust. Obviously he disliked her looks or perhaps scent, Liana could not tell which, and then he spoke again.
~Your clothing is most unsuitable,~ he turned away briefly and waved a tri-digit paw in the air as clothing appeared before him, he threw these said clothes at Liana. ~You will wear these, you are dismissed.~
Liana, quite forgetting the presence she was in, had pulled a face at the clothing in her arms. A white blouse (which was acceptable enough), but much worse was a long Victorian style skirt. Liana abhorred skirts and dresses, they were completely impractical and she stood by that strong opinion quite stubbornly.
“I refuse to wear this.” She had stated raising her chin haughtily.
In a split second the creature, whose name she now knew was Mewtwo, had lifted his paw and a constricting force wrapped around Liana’s neck causing light spots to appear in her vision.
~Remember the rules girl, you would do best to listen better in future.~ Mewtwo’s telepathic voice was dangerously soft at that point. ~Do not speak unless spoken to and do as you are told.~
With that said Mewtwo had let the psychic force on her neck lessen and had teleported from sight.
So here she was now sat under a scraggly old tree glaring up at the heavens wearing the ridiculous skirt. But just out of stubborn defiance she had kept her own blouse and still wore the archers’ wrist guards as always.
Liana was thrown out of her thoughts when a head butted at her knee. She looked down and straight into the intelligent blue eyes of a Meowth. Smiling slightly the young woman let her hand play over the cats’ fine fur and strange golden charm that he and his kind wore on their foreheads. For want of a better thing to do Liana began a conversation with this new companion.
“Why do you wear these charms?” she questioned, her fingers running over the delicate grooves in the golden charm.
The Meowth, for want of a better thing to do, decided to comply in answering her. Although he knew from his master that humans were inherently ignorant creatures who never understood Pokémon, and nothing would convince the feline otherwise.
“I’m not sure why we wear them… all I know is I was born with one. I’ve never had a mother or father to explain the purpose of the charm to me. I am a clone, all the Pokémon on this island are.”
“Ah, so all the creatures here are clones. It’s a shame you don’t know about the charm I’ve been itching to ask that question for ages you know.” Liana turned her penetrating gaze on the cat and smiled.
It was all the poor creature could do not to gape at this human. She had heard? She had heard and understood his language?
“Amazing!” he murmured with a new respect for his masters' most recent servant (the others had been completely stupid in his not so humble opinion). “Can you understand us all?”
“Of course.” She answered briefly, and turned her head to look once again at the stars.
Meowth wanted to rush inside and let the others know this discovery. This human female could converse with them all! It was no wonder Mewtwo let her survive. It was rare he let a human live long enough to even plea for their lives, let alone be a servant, but having a servant who could talk to them without having to use Mewtwo as a translator would obviously be useful.
Liana glanced down to see Meowth’s still shocked expression and laughed, her eyes dancing in amusement. “Catching flies are we?” she questioned wickedly teasing him.
Meowth nudged her palm with his head once again and proclaimed in grand and very serious tones, “You’re so weird.”
Liana merely laughed and scratched the cloned creature behind the ears affectionately.

Not far off a pair of amethyst eyes narrowed dangerously. He barely suppressed a growl of disapproval as he watched the Meowth clone throw itself into the humans open arms and nuzzle his face into her neck.
Frowning as he examined her from a distance, Mewtwo shifted his weight to rest on the balls of his large, cat-like hind feet as he waited silently. Her lack of respect for his wishes was extremely vexing, he admitted. She was conversing with Meowth as if they were friends when he had told her to remain silent in their presence, and she still insisted on wearing those ridiculous wrist guards.
Not to mention, she shouldn’t even be outside at this time, I gave the girl a curfew! Mewtwo thought enraged, conveniently forgetting that he had told Liana no such thing.
Rocking back and forth on the balls of his feet, Mewtwo narrowed his eyes a little more and listened to the soft murmur of their voices.

Liana and Meowth were now chatting freely and as easily as if they had known one another their entire life times. Meowth was a naturally friendly Pokémon unlike most of the others on New Island. Personally he had no qualms with humans apart from thinking of them as certified idiots. So it was that he freely chatted about life at the New Island castle and the battle that had made Mewtwo the new ‘ruler of the world’ to this human. Liana smiled and nodded politely as he spoke, occasionally telling Meowth of life on the mainland.
“Your master,” Liana started, smiling archly at her new friend, “is most definitely the most arrogant creature I’ve ever had the displeasure of meeting.”
Liana was not really a fool; she knew that Meowth could easily report back everything she had said to Mewtwo. However she just couldn't help but trust this cat. There was something innately sincere about his countenance and she decided that she could use a friend of sorts whilst on the island.
Meowth currently had his lower lip thrust out in a somewhat amusing pout; his head was tilted in contemplation as he looked up at the human female who had dared to insult his master.
“But,” she continued, her manner amused at Meowth’s unwavering loyalty to Mewtwo, “perhaps something upset him to make him like that, his eyes seem sad you know.”
Meowth nodded fervently, glad someone else besides he and Pikachu (Mewtwo’s closest friends) had noticed this.
“What do you think caused it?” Meowth said quietly, his eyes widening in speculation.
“That,” the girl responded as she leaned down to whisper confidentially into the furry ear, “is a good question.”

Mewtwo growled quietly, the feral sound resonating in his chest; he had had quite enough of being talked about. Striding forward, he made his presence known.
~Girl, what are you doing out here? Inside now!~
