The wind blew gently across the ground. In the red hue of the fading sunlight one could see the tall grass undulate with each gust making the entire plain seem like an ocean. Except, this wasn't grass; this wasn't an Earth plain. This was the great plain of Ava'cli and it was nowhere near Earth as we know it. The plain extended in every direction over flats and rolling hills as far as the eye can see; unbroken save a few sparse trees or a pool here and there. A form stood on the plain watching the light fade from view, the Sha'kas rose into the sky behind him. These mountains were few but they were massive, towering nearly a mile high into sky these craggy mountains dwarfed all other terrain on the planet.

The form stood at the crest of a hill only half of a kilometer from the city, the red light glinted off the metallic armor he wore. It wasn't much, just a vest for the upper body, arm guards, and forward leg plating. Standard armor for any city guard except for one feature, at the center of the chest the armor bore a crystal cast in amethyst glass. This was the mark of a high ranking temple honor guard. Kae'til stood there taking in the sight he so often saw letting the stress of the day melt away. To him, the "Daily grind" could be more stressful than a crises, but then he had been trained that way. Combat was his profession and his natural aptitude had led him to his current position. His order not only demanded exceptional strength and skill but intellect. Kae'til was the pride of his species. However, the guard was not for combating crime, but for defending the others from outside forces. There had not been an attack for over a century and these affronts were now only remembered in records and teaching and the only thing that kept the light guard on duty at all was the recounting of the atrocities of the past attacks. But perhaps this was fate, destiny... I believe it was something higher; because on that day, at that time, they came. They came not to kill or to destroy, but to capture. Because they, as a race, believed they could make themselves better, through learning, through inventing, and through assimilating.

That was the day... Man came.

I look forward to reading the rest of this story, though at the end when you said the day man came it gave me the image of the Imperium of Man, bringing the holy light of the Emperor to the foul xenos! :P
