Pallet Town wasn't quite what they'd expected. It was small and quiet, and pretty much the only thing worth putting it on the map for was Oak's lab.

Alex seemed relaxed, which was a major contrast to their time in Viridian City. The trio had just stepped out of the forest and were heading toward the city when he suddenly tensed and refused to take a step farther. The boys had managed to coax him to continue, but upon reaching the city limits, he turned tail and fled. It had taken all nine of their Pok?mon and their own strength to stop him. Matt's Jigglypuff knocked Alex out with Sing, and they had to put him in their only Ultraball to get him through the city.

When they had finally released him in the field near Pallet, he was madder than a Primeape with a hernia. It hadn't taken long for him to calm down once they explained their situation, though. He even thanked them as they stepped into town. The young trainers had yet to get an explanation out of him, though.

"I'm hungry!" Matt suddenly whined.

Again? Alex thought to himself. The most he could figure was that the boy was finally going through a growth spurt.

"Fine..." Peter grumbled, and looked around. It didn't take long to spot a small caf? just down the street. Matt got a sub, Peter grabbed a bag of chips and Alex settled for sipping some coffee and staring out the large window. He noticed that very few people in this town were trainers, most likely due to the lack of a Pok?mon center and mart. He then turned his attention back to the two cousins, amused by Matt's attempt at eating and talking at the same time.

"Didn't your mom ever teach you not to talk with your mouth full?" Peter complained. Alex had to smile at that.

"Sorry..." Matt mumbled in apology, and finished his meal in silence.

When he was finished, they continued up to the lab. Alex couldn't help but smile at a Squirtle and a Bulbasaur running around, taking turns chasing each other around a large puddle.

Professor Oak was completely unprepared for the trio that walked in his front door. He vaguely remembered the two trainers; just two months before he'd approved Matt's request for a license. But the tall one standing behind them... There was something strange about him.

"Can I help you boys?" he asked, greeting them with a warm smile.

Alex, who had previously been staring curiously at all the books and gadgets lining the shelves, turned his gaze to the old man. It didn't take much to see he was a little nervous. "I would like to get a trainer's license." He explained simply.

Oak was a little surprised by the calmness of those words. Then again, most prospective trainers were young children; they had boundless enthusiasm. "Very well then!" he agreed, giving Alex another big smile. "If youll just come with me..."

Peter sat on the floor leaning against a bookshelf, watching his younger cousin run around poking curiously at the strange objects sitting on the shelves. "Matt, would you just chill out?" he snapped, then yawned boredly.

Finally the professor and Alex emerged from Oak's office, the old man's face wearing an expression of shock. Peter peeked around the bookshelf, seeing the hybrid grinning.

Alex saw the question in his eyes before he could even open his mouth to ask, and flicked a plastic card at him. Peter picked it up and studied it, a smile spreading across his own face. "You did it!"

Alex's smile widened. "Yup." The older boy handed the plastic ID card back and stood up. "Thanks." He tucked it away inside his coat. "You two ready to go?"

"Am I ever!" Matt yelped, running over to them. "Can we go? Please? I am soooo bored!"

Peter shook his head, embarrassed. Alex couldn't help but laugh. "Yeah, let's go." He rested a hand on the smaller boy's head and followed Peter out.

"So what Pok?mon did you get?"

Alex reached into his coat and pulled out a tiny Pok?ball, letting it grow back to its original size. He released the Pok?mon inside. "Peter, Matt, meet Synder."

"Char!" The small Charmander bounced excitedly and ran over to the boys, looking up at them curiously.

"Aww she's so cute!" Matt exclaimed, kneeling down. "Hi Synder!"

"A Charmander?" Peter frowned. "It's gonna be a lot harder to beat Brock or Misty with a fire type."

"Oh, I know." Alex flashed the boy a smile. "I enjoy challenges." Peter shook his head, but was unable to hide his own smile.

"I should have guessed, really..."

They turned back to watch Matt and Synder play.

"I don't think she was born in the wild." Alex commented. "She's so trusting of humans." But so wary of me... I hope I can earn her trust soon. He held the Pok?ball up, ready to recall his Charmander, but paused. Synder watched him carefully as her new trainer stared at the contraption, then shrunk it down to the size of a marble and stuck it in a pocket.

When given a questioning stare, he shrugged. "It's not a lot of fun being stuck in one of those things..." he explained. "So I'm not gonna force her back in there." Alex smiled as Synder stared at him incredulously, then slowly walked over to stand by his leg.

"Well, I guess it's time to go then... We should stock up as much as we can while we're here." Alex suggested. The boys nodded.

"Okay. Matt and I can handle this, you wait here for us. I promise we'll be no more than an hour." That said, the two cousins headed further into town.

After they disappeared from view, Alex turned to face north. North was Viridian City... hopefully Peter still had the Ultraball in his backpack, Alex didn't think he could go back through there without freaking out and causing himself (or worse, someone else) bodily harm. So many horrible memories...

He was pulled from his thoughts as Synder tugged on his pants, a worried expression on her face. Had he been projecting his feelings? Well, perhaps not, Pok?mon always tended to pick up on others' emotions better than humans...

True to their word, Peter and Matt returned less than an hour later with more food and other supplies. "Great!" Alex cheered. "Let's get going!"

Matt and Peter happily followed him out of town.

Giovanni stood on the metal walkway overlooking the lab. The scientists below him had been working non-stop for the past two years to make a perfect Mew clone. And this one would be more obedient than Mewtwo. Perhaps his dream to own the world's strongest Pok?mon would at last become a reality.

He looked down to a large, black for in one of the tanks. So many others had died in the cloning process, but this one... This one was strong.

He was perfect.
