Liana was trying very hard to ignore the burning anger and hurt she felt at Mewtwo's last comments. She shook her head clear once more and tried to concentrate on the game she was playing with Nidoqueens babies; Darumasan ga Koronda, if she remembered correctly. It had been years since she'd played this game with her own friends. She turned and smiled ruefully down at the small Rhyhorn she had caught. He was pouting.
"Why do I have to be the Oni anyway?" she questioned.
"Cause you're more fun as an Oni. The others cheat." The child stated emphatically.
"Daruma-san ga Koronda!" Liana shouted back to the small pack of clone children.
From behind her Liana heard the graceless footsteps of one of the Nidoqueen babies. She took quick small steps as Liana called before reaching Liana's back and making a cutting motion between her and the Rhyhorn.
"Kitta!" she squeaked as she did so before turning and bolting with the others as Liana turned, grinned in a faux evil way, and gave chase.
Mewtwo watched the game from a short distance, Mew approached him and watched amused as Liana broke the rules of the game; catching Nidoqueen and tickling her ribs.
"Hey, nooo… that's, t-that's cheating!" The child gasped out between shouts of laughter.
"I'm an Oni though. Oni's have no sense of fair play!" Liana retorted teasingly.
The game degenerated further when the Meowths, Pikachu and James descended on the group claiming to be helpers of the evil Liana-Oni sent to capture and tickle-torture Nidoqueens and Rhyhorns. The babies squeaked and screamed happily as they all bolted away from 'Oni and Oni's helpers'.
Mew laughed at them, her more playful nature wishing to go join them. However she had business with her clone to discuss. She took her eyes off the game and turned to him.
"So, Mewtwo," she started purposefully, "are you just going to reject the offered help of some more humans just because they're trainers?"
~I am rejecting their help because they would not help us if they knew who I was. However I am also rejecting their help because, yes, they are trainers. They cannot be trusted.~
"Strange, very strange."
~What is?~ Mewtwo knew she was trying to goad him into talking and asking that question, but right at that moment he didn't care.
"You are so ready to reject their help even though it could mean the outcome of a battle yet to arrive. You reject them purely on the basis that they catch Pokémon, and yet you have never questioned if Liana and her companions are trainers as well."
Mewtwo stiffened; embarrassed that he'd been caught short. She was entirely right of course. He had never once questioned the humans who currently resided on his island if they were trainers.
Mewtwo kept his eyes firmly fixed on the group of young ones, who by now had ganged up on the Oni and were clambering over her, tickling her in revenge. The Oni-helpers were of no use to her. They merely sat on the side lines laughing at her plight as she jokingly ranted at them.
"You fiends! You devils! I shall have my revenge. How dare you turn against the all powerful Oni!"
Mewtwo turned to confront Mew only to find that the infuriating Goddess had left to chat with Jessie and Lucinda. Instead of following her he walked up to Liana, folded his arms and waited for the human to notice him stood nearby.
Liana looked up to recognise the shadow that had fallen over her. Forgetting that she was supposed to be annoyed with him she smiled and jerked a thumb towards her attackers.
"They started it."
"We did not!" one of them cried back indignantly.
Meowth decided to step in and distract the youngsters when he saw that Mewtwo wished to talk to Liana by telling them about one of his Rocket misadventures. Liana half listened as she stood up and brushed off her clothes.
Liana remembered her bad temper and folded her own arms. "So have you decided to skip the whole 'pitiful servitude' part and just kill me outright?"
~Insolent wench.~
"Ooh that hurt, really harsh." She bit back. She didn't know why she was playing with fire, she must have a death wish, but she was willing to continue just to put the Pokémon with the horrendous manners firmly in his place.
Mewtwo rubbed his temples and sighed before speaking again. ~I wanted to ask you a question. A few questions actually.~
Liana pursed her lips but nodded regardless.
~Are you, or any of your friends Pokémon trainers?~
Liana looked mildly surprised by the question. She hadn't been expecting something like that.
"No, actually, I've never trained. Since I could always understand Pokémon I knew that it was cruel to take them away from their territory and families all for the sake of catching and battling with them. When I met Lucinda and Rhys I tried to get them to see things that way as well."
~You own that Rapidash though.~
"Artemis' family has been with my family since her great grand dam's time. My mother never forced the Rapidash to stay with us and neither do I. They stay of their own free will. I raised Artemis and her siblings from foals; I guess they just like me. Lucinda owns a Growlithe, but again he stays because he wants to, I've asked him, he sees them as a pack just as much as any Growlithes would be. Rhys used to be a trainer but he let the Pokémon who wanted to leave go after I talked with him."
~That is commendable at least.~ Mewtwo admitted grudgingly.
"I don't know about Jessie and James however." Liana admitted. "They may still have Pokémon from when they were in Team Rocket, but I'm sure they treat them well."
Mewtwo nodded before falling into thought. Liana listened to Meowth smiling as he acted out a Pikachu's Thundershock technique and then threw himself backwards as if he was being thrown away from the blast. "An' dat's when we went blasting off, right into a darn field of cacti!"
Liana winced at the mental image as the children gasped enraptured by the somewhat violent retelling. She'd best warn Nidoqueen about Meowth's stories or her children were going to grow up with some pretty warped ideas.
~Liana.~
"Yes?"
~Do you sense anything untoward from the letter that this Lance character sent?~
"You'd be better off asking Rhys that question. He's better with that Retrocognition stuff than me. To answer your question though, no I didn't feel anything bad from the letter."
Mewtwo nodded again before closing his eyes for a brief moment. ~You may have been right earlier. We could use some assistance, after all my psychic attacks to not affect the Scorpyres, perhaps they won't affect other monsters either.~
Liana looked at him sharply. Was he really going to agree to this?
~I shall go to the mainland and speak with Lance if I can. Hopefully he will listen to reason and aid us without causing a fuss.~
Liana offered the clone a smile. She wasn't about to forgive him so easily for his harsh comments, but at least he was listening to reason.
Mew appeared as if from nowhere, Mewtwo could have sworn that she'd been listening in the whole time.
"I will be joining you, Mewtwo."
~What? Why? I don't want your assistance.~ the clone retorted bluntly.
Mew didn't answer but Liana suspected that Mew wanted to keep an eye on her clone. It would be easy for him to lose his temper and kill the humans if he felt inclined to. Mew would be able to stop him if that happened.
"Why do I have to be the Oni anyway?" she questioned.
