Chapter 10:
It took a few weeks before Mewtwo was well enough to once again wander around the palace. Liana had supposed that now he was back on his feet and on the road to recovery (the bandages and the stitches still remained and would do so for a while yet), that he would once again start bossing her around and issuing death threats. However Mewtwo seemed more civil towards her after his injuries. In fact he seemed to enjoy teasing the girl more than bossing her around. He would seek her out now and again only to start a short argument of sorts that usually wound up being very sarcastic from both parties.
Liana decided that there were just some things that would change the outlook of one person to another, and that just happened to be helping the other over grievous injury!
It was a warm summery morning two months or so after she arrived that surprised Liana most of all. She had finished checking up on Nidoqueen's babies and was relaxing with a good book on a chair by a large window. The sunlight was filtering in and the blue sky looked too inviting to be sat indoors. After pausing in her reading for the fifth time to stare outside, Liana gave up, shut her book and wandered out.
She stood with her back to the castle down by the shoreline, bare feet being lapped at by the surf. She pondered over her situation for a while and came to the conclusion that she very much liked the company of the clones, Mewtwo was tolerable enough, and the island was lovely apart from being sparse in the flora department.
Her thoughts returned to the mainland and she felt a small twinge of guilt and homesickness; she missed Lucinda, Rhys, Stefan, her uncle and the creatures she knew there. She mulled over this for a while before hitting on a decision. She could always ask one of the flying Pokémon here to send a letter to her village. That way her friends would know she was alive. Despite Mewtwo's new-found civility she wouldn't let him know. He may be a little friendlier towards her but he could easily find her village and decimate it if he knew what she was doing. He still seemed to hate humans after all.
She had just decided on using Mewtwo's amiable and rather adorable Dragonite for the delivery of her secret letter, when on turning back to the castle, she ran straight into Mewtwo himself. He'd managed to sneak up on her yet again without notice.
Oh shit, did he hear me? What am I gonna do now? Will he stop me from sending the letter? Will he pry information about my village from me? Is he going to kill me for 'plotting' this!?
These and many more questions jumped hoops in her head as she stared at Mewtwo like a deer caught in headlights.
However if Mewtwo had heard her he didn't seem to care. In fact he didn't seem to be paying any heed to the bug-eyed girl at all. His gaze was focused on something in the distance; he was stood stock still with an unreadable expression on his usually stoic face.
Liana's mental rambling came to a halt as she realised he was looking somewhere far off. Liana threw caution to the winds and approached him, standing at his side she squinted out to sea to try and gauge what he was looking at so intensely.
"What's wrong?"
~Do you sense something?~
Before Liana could even open her mouth to answer, Mewtwo's eyes had widened as if in recognition of what he was seeing. Like quicksilver Mewtwo mentally locked the doors of the New Island castle, picked up and threw Liana so that she was hung over his shoulder, and all but ran under the dock for want of a better place to go.
Three eloquent words rose in the girl's brain at that point: What. The. Fuck!?
At least the tide was in and they were stood waist deep in water and not mud this time!
Obviously concerned about Liana's possible reaction to this weird situation, Mewtwo wrapped one arm around her waist to prevent her running off, and put a paw over her mouth to prevent a possible tirade of shouting.
"Wha th' ell dja fink your doin'?" Liana's response to his actions was suitably muffled.
Her mind scurried in warped little circles at this newest turn of events. One moment she'd been asking him what was wrong, the next she had been tossed ass over head as she'd taken a ride on his shoulder. Now he was apparently holding her 'hostage' under the docks while effectively locking in the other clones. Her mind came to one conclusion: Oh Gawd he is gonna kill me!!!
Liana was sure of it now!
He's going to kill me and dump my body in the ocean and my poor corpse is gonna end up as fish food. I don't wanna be fish food I want a decent cremation with some tasteful music playing and my friends in attendance!
Mewtwo noted the scared eyes glancing at him and the hysterical mental monologue, he sighed in exasperation before talking.
"Cease that prattling girl. I'm not going to kill you."
Liana was so worked up she hadn't noticed his promise, or the fact he was actually talking rather than mentally projecting his voice. She struggled against his arm and sank her teeth into his paw.
Mewtwo grunted by held firm. She bit me? How disgusting!
"Let go of my paw."
Liana simply ground her teeth harder into his flesh. Mewtwo winced; he'd be bruised once this was over. Sighing he tried again.
"Let go of my paw. I am not going to harm you, please Liana."
The calculated use of her name and the plea had the desired effect. Liana withdrew her teeth and glanced up at him, a frown on her face.
"Look up. Do not use psychic powers of any kind. Something is approaching the island."
Liana relaxed a little and did as she was asked. She smiled against his paw. She hadn't known he could actually talk! His voice was as deep as it was when mentally projected, but it had lost the echo, it was warmer and a little hesitant – nice to listen to, Liana thought.
Looking up through the slats of the wooden dock, Liana saw a large shape approaching New Island in the sky. It was a bird of some sort. Liana realised now why Mewtwo wanted her to keep quiet both physically and mentally. The bird was powerful she could tell, and it was searching. It was using a grid pattern over the sea, coming closer to the island with each passing moment.
Liana looked quizzically at Mewtwo and reading her expression he said simply, "I believe this is what attacked me."
Mewtwo felt Liana shift a little in his grip, he glanced down to see she had shape shifted a little way (Meowth had explained her ability to him one day with great enthusiasm). There were snowy white feathers sprouting at odd locations on her face and her eyes had turned amber and piercing, eagle's eyes he guessed.
Liana didn't need the eagle's eyes to feel what she felt in her mind and heart next though. A surge of wrongness practically exploded into her senses as the creature passed directly over them. The bird was pure evil, it's very being exuded hate and malice, and it was practically oozing with it!
Liana's stomach churned at the feeling, as if she'd swallowed sour milk. What nearly sent her over the edge was when she finally realised what the bird was. It was too big to be a Fearow, there was no elements surrounding it so it couldn't be any of the legendary birds (and why would the Gods attack Mewtwo anyway?), it wasn't any Pokémon or creature from this realm. It was a Phoenix!
She murmured this to Mewtwo and added, "Phoenixes are supposed to be benevolent and good creatures, they're never evil and they never attack people, they only heal. This one's been corrupted by someone. A Seer or a Druid has taken it from its own realm and turned it evil!"
Mewtwo didn't know for sure what this meant. But Liana's tone inferred that it was bad.
Mewtwo could sense the evil dripping from the bird from where he stood, and for some reason it made him shiver. He was instantly disgusted with himself for such an action. He was the master of his own emotions and some mere bird had upended that control so effortlessly.
Liana felt Mewtwo tighten his hold on her and heard his breath become quick and shallow. However she said nothing as it would only embarrass him. She knew from experience what it was like to freeze from fear like that.
Trying to shake off the desire to shake like a kitten and hold onto the human for dear life. Mewtwo went to make a show of bravado by trying to move out from under the dock. He'd battle the creature and win!
Liana felt him move and grabbed his arm warningly before shaking her head no, "You're still healing," she hissed, "if you couldn't win last time at full health what do you think will happen this time?"
Mewtwo glared at her attack on his abilities but stayed still.
After a few minutes the Phoenix circled the island for a final time before flying back the way it had come. Liana waited until she could no longer feel it in her mind before wading out from under the dock. She looked back to see Mewtwo staring at nothing for a few moments before he pulled himself together and unlocked the castle doors with a careless wave of his paw.
Several clones rushed out and struck a battle stance, looking wildly for a foe that was no longer around.
"We felt something weird over the island. What was it?"
"Don't worry about it, it's gone" Liana replied in an offhand manner.
Mewtwo approached Liana and took her by the arm, dragging her away from the other Pokémon. She sputtered objections at his rude behaviour but shut up when she saw the look on his face. He was royally pissed.
He didn't stop walking until they got to the library where he indicated for her to sit. She plopped into one of the comfortable armchairs and Mewtwo finally bit out. ~Explain to me please. What was that thing? What was it doing here? Why and how had it been corrupted?~
Liana sighed and rubbed her temples at his moody behaviour before beginning her explanation.
It took a few weeks before Mewtwo was well enough to once again wander around the palace.
