(Be warned this one was written at 4am after reading way too much Pride and Prejudice!)
Chapter 9:
He winced at the sounds, softened yet sharpened in his brain. His head felt like it was splitting and he found he could feel the dull ache from his dozens of wounds. He could feel that his own face was as hot as a Charmander flame. On top of his injuries he appeared to have a fever as well. Perfect, just peachy.
A small hand, warm and faintly damp, pressed itself against his forehead as if trying to vaguely gauge his temperature. Whilst another fiddled with fabric that was wrapped securely around his torso, a bandage, he concluded.
Wake up silly, you're friends are worried. A voice, young and childlike and distinctly female pushed itself into his thoughts. Only nobody around him had spoken or even thought the phrase, he could tell.
Who?... What?... Where am I? His thoughts ran amok, corkscrewing in confused circles. Who did that voice belong to? It sounded so familiar! Who was placing their hand on his forehead? Where was he?
He considered giving into the peaceful darkness once more to alleviate the pain, but again the small voice echoed in his head and cajoled him, urged him to stay conscious. Nuh-uh you won't get better if you just give up. C'mon open you're eyes! The voice sing-songed.
Something so familiar about that voice, something, someone… who? A name just out of reach, he tried to grasp at it, but missed…
Mewtwo woke up.
Amethyst eyes flashed open; they met another pair of eyes that mirrored his in colour. A face swam into view: red curls, purple eyes, tanned skin and full lips. Liana, what the hell is she doing here?
The startled light in Liana's eyes faded to relief, she gave the clone a brilliant smile and then glanced over her shoulder.
"He's awake, Meowth." She called softly, "You can go tell the others."
Mewtwo heard a cry of delight come from the far corner of his room and the sound of paws scurrying away.
A sudden surge in pain nearly made Mewtwo throw up. Liana quickly turned to him and placed her hand on his shoulder in a strangely comforting gesture.
"Are you alright?"
~I am fine wench.~ he grumbled at showing his weakness, ~Leave me be.~
"Yeah, yeah. Well, tough. You have to put up with me until you're better. The clones put me in charge of your welfare." The girl snorted as she reached across to a nightstand and picked up a damp washcloth, placing it on Mewtwo's forehead.
The infuriating little…
He watched Liana carefully as she worked. She would flit around the room clearing things away, only to come back to his side and check his temperature or the bandages that covered a great deal of his body. Once whilst doing this, she tsked and unwound a bandage that had blood starting to seep through, only to replace it with another. Despite her obvious resentment towards him her fingers were gentle and didn't disturb the wound she dressed.
Another wave of nausea engulfed him when he tried to turn his head once too often to follow the girl's progress around the room. He squeezed his eyes shut and willed it away again.
When he opened his eyes Liana was at his side once more a pail in one hand, her other pressed experimentally against his head again. She noticed his glance at the bucket and chuckled.
"I don't want the bed or myself to be covered in vomit thanks." She smiled ruefully, "You took quite a beating. Your friends were really worried."
Something about her last comment tugged at Mewtwo's memory but it flittered away again before he could grasp at it. He pushed himself up on his elbows a little and looked squarely at Liana.
~Why did you help me?~
Liana shrugged, "It was the right thing to do. The clones would never have forgiven me if you'd died. And believe me as tough as you are there were a few times I thought you were a goner."
Mewtwo rumbled in displeasure at the apparent attack on his capabilities before he sensed something strange, ~Why are there more creatures here than when I left?~
Liana looked confused for a second before beaming at him happily, "Nidoqueen had babies whilst you were gone."
Mewtwo hid the look of surprise on his face; he hadn't even sensed that she had been with child!
After a few minutes Mewtwo began to feel sleep tugging at his mind once more. He needed rest. As he began to drift off he turned to Liana and said something that utterly shocked her.
~Thank you.~

Although Mewtwo had 'requested' that she leave him be the first time he had woken, the clones had been adamant that Liana stay by his side. Liana agreed if only to stop the persistent volley of enquiries from the other Pokémon. Also she wondered if Mewtwo would know what had attacked him. Psyduck and Golduck's attempts had proven fruitless. She agreed then to watch Mewtwo, only on the condition that if he became sour in her company, then the clones would take the blame.
So it was that Liana found herself sat in one of the chairs in Mewtwo's room in the dead of night. Sleep was most certainly out of the question, she just couldn't get comfortable in her seat. Instead she had left long enough to take a book from Mewtwo's expansive library (nothing on his shelves had piqued her interest), and was now curled up on the chair deeply enraptured with her book. She had read this book plenty of times as a child. However after Mewtwo had began his reign she had lost her lovely, if threadbare copy, in the move to the village. She was delighted to have found the story again.
Liana reached over to the small table beside her without interrupting her glance from the page and picked up a mug of coffee, took a swig and set it back down. Who knew Mewtwo would keep coffee at the castle? Then again perhaps he just wasn't a morning person. Liana wasn't overly fond of the stuff, she found it quite bitter, but it was either that or fall asleep and wake up in a painful position not found anywhere but a yoga class!
~Your eyes will be damaged if you read with such paltry lighting.~
Liana was sure she had levitated in shock. Mewtwo had woken up at some point without her notice. She glanced at the 'paltry lighting', a single candle, and shrugged in Mewtwo's direction.
"If I had any stronger light it would have disturbed you. The clones would murder me if you didn't get adequate rest."
~And I will murder you if you do not stop fussing over me like some overly maternal Kangaskhan. Sleep girl.~
Liana open and closed her mouth a few times as if trying to think up a suitable come back. Nothing came to her, so she said, "Well it wasn't really my idea to baby you. Your friends insisted that I keep an eye on you until you're better."
Mewtwo snorted, ~Well if you can follow orders from them, you can follow them from me. Let me be, I'm not going to drop dead as soon as you leave. If you don't sleep you will end up looking like a Ghastly.~ he looked her over, ~Though you seem to be quite close in appearance already.~
Liana blinked once, then twice. Her jaw seemed quite happy to take up residence on the floor. He was teasing her? The world could stop spinning now.
"Fine," she snapped the book shut and stood up, blowing out the candle, "fine, I'll go get some bloody sleep. Not like you would just drop dead anyway. You're too obnoxious for that. Your death scene will probably be ten minutes long with a grand speech."
~Glad to see that you know me so well.~ Was she imagining it or was there a hint of humour in his voice?
Liana brushed off all thoughts of the infuriating clone that lay across the room. She placed the book down and marched out.
Feeling bold as Mewtwo was apparently still bed-ridden, she decided to forgo sleeping on the floor or at a window seat and stubbornly went to find a room with a proper bed. She'd need one if she was going to get any sleep after that coffee.
She woke up to Pikachu and Meowth looking quizzically at her, "How come you're not with Mewtwo?"
"Hm? Oh he ordered me to get some sleep. I couldn't very well do it in a chair so I decided to find somewhere more suitable."
"How is he?"
"Well enough to be annoying let's put it that way." The pair looked sceptical so she gave in, "I'll go check on him. Just let me wake up first 'kay?"
Meowth and Pikachu took the hint and left. Liana took some time waking up properly; the bed was too comfy to leave so quickly.
Walking into Mewtwo's room to check on him she found that he was sat up and reading the book she'd left behind yesterday 'Pride and Prejudice'. She was amused to see that he was so interested in it and also that the genetically enhanced super-clone seemed to need glasses; a pair was perched on his nose as he read.
"How are you feeling?"
There was no answer.
Liana felt a bit put out by his lack of response, and so noting how far into the book he had read Liana jokingly recited, "It is your turn to say something now, Mr. Darcy. – I talked about the dance, and you ought to make some kind of remark on the size of the room, or the number of couples."
Mewtwo caught on straight away and without missing a beat replied in a monotone, ~Whatever you want me to say shall be said.~
Liana bit back a laugh, she hadn't expected a reply, perhaps a stern look or to be told to leave, "You'd make a terrible Mr. Darcy."
Mewtwo merely smirked and returned to the book. Liana guessed that she wouldn't be able to read it for a while, and since he seemed perfectly fine, she left.
