Chapter 8:
Liana would often wonder in the future if it was the events a few days later that gave her a turning point that saved her from a possible early grave, and saved another from losing himself completely in his hate.

A few days had been spent Mewtwo and chore free. Liana was beginning to feel somewhat relaxed now. She was on 'holiday'.

Liana contemplated the last few days. Only one significant thing had happened since divulging her ability to the clones, and that was a birth among them.

It had been a warm, lazy day when a frantic Bulbasaur had run up to Liana asking for help. The clones knew that Liana was good at healing and they needed her healing now! Nidoqueen was in pain.

Liana had rushed over to a secluded spot of the palace where Nidoqueen was slumped, laying on her side, breathing heavily with her face contorted in pain. A myriad of possible diseases and problems ran through Liana's frazzled mind as she gently questioned the Nidoqueen.

"Where does it hurt?"

"M-my stomach…"

Liana had placed a hand absently on the creature's stomach only to feel it ripple beneath her like a convulsion, or a contraction Liana realised!

"I think you're having a baby." Liana had gasped stunned.

Things had turned chaotic quite quickly after that remark. All the clones seemed to want to help, but such a large crowd surrounding a stressed, first time mother in labour couldn't be anything but a hindrance! Liana had shooed off all but a few that she asked to help.

Liana was somewhat frantic. Being isolated and clones they hadn't known much about babies except for what instinct and 'memories' from their original selves taught them. Liana had groaned at the lack of help she was going to attain before pulling herself together to help the expectant mother.

I'm a healer not a midwife! The closest I've been to a birth was when that Persian gave birth in our barn years ago!

Liana was pulled back to the present smiling at the memory of the other day. Thankfully things had gone well. Nidoqueen hadn't needed much help apart from moral support and, as with human mothers, someone to rant at in her pain.

Nidoqueen was now the proud mother of several baby Nidoqueens and Rhyhorns. The ordeal had proven to work in Liana's favour as well. Despite not doing that much apart from diagnosing and helping, the clones now held a respect for the human girl; especially the parents, Nidoqueen and Rhyhorn.

Liana was now laid on one of the window seats watching the sunset. The flaring gold's and oranges warmed her face; sighing peacefully she pillowed her head on her arms and closed her eyes for a while.

She was shaken awake by a frantic nudging an hour or two later, night had fallen and the skies were clear. She shook herself awake and yawned, turning to see who had woken her. Ninetales was stood beside her, her tails bristled and a panicked look on her usually tranquil face.

"What is it? Is something wrong with the babies?" Liana jerked into a sitting position readily.

"No, Mewtwo's back."

Liana's concern melted visibly and she went to lie back down, "Is that all?"

"N-no you don't understand, something's wrong we found him outside, he's injured!" the Pokémon was visibly shaken, "Please you have to help him."

Liana got up and glanced at Ninetales warily. A few thoughts ran through her head. She couldn't condone! After all Mewtwo had put the human race through, she should just leave him to fate. He'd either get better or not, and if he didn't… she'd be free! For a split second Liana tasted that freedom and all it could mean, right before her gentler side argued against her. As evil as he was the clones loved him, they would despise her if she let him be, and Liana had come to like them enough so as not to like the idea of being hated. After all if he died, in a way it would make her as bad as him…

Snorting at her own weakness, Liana got up off the window seat and followed Ninetales down to the entrance hall. I must be a glutton for punishment.

There was a plethora of clones surrounding Mewtwo. She was surprised that whatever had injured him had rendered him unconscious. He was lying on his back, breathing shallow and laboured, sweat pouring off his face. Then she saw the blood.

Liana gasped softly and gingerly reached out to the fallen Pokémon. She turned him over and exclamations of shock rang out around the hall. His back was lacerated. Gashes covered the skin of his back; they were deep and still oozing. She had spied another slash on his stomach, his tail bore the brunt of more cuts, and she also noted the beginnings of a black eye forming.

"What happened to him?"

"We don't know, we found him like this just outside, he must have teleported back here. Please Liana we have to help him." One of the clones pleaded, sounding almost tearful.

Liana looked conflicted again for a moment before she started to issue orders, "Charizard, take him up to his room. Meowth, I need you to find a first aid kit, potions, and bandages, anything that can help. A few of you go with him, help him carry the stuff. I need warm water too; someone needs to bring me that. Psyduck, Golduck," she called the Pokémon to her side, "you're the closest pair we have to psychic Pokémon here. I need you to try and find out what did this to Mewtwo. Scry, meditate, look into Mewtwo's memory if you can, just find some answers okay?"

Liana wasn't personally concerned for Mewtwo but she knew the clones were. She also knew that whatever had bought down Mewtwo had to be damn powerful, and she wanted to know what the hell it was.
