Chapter 4
The light of the torch wavered in a nervous motion over the immediate landscape. It was pitch black in the forest with only the occasional call of Hoot-hoot, Zubat and various bug-type Pokémon to keep any humans wandering about company.

Not many humans dared ventured out of their villages these days. Although there hadn't been any recent attacks to speak of, there was always the chance that Mewtwo would start up his spate of human killing once more.

However two humans were doing just that. A tall man and his much shorter partner were traversing the forest with only a torch each to light the near impenetrable darkness. They muttered nervously between themselves, the occasional shout of their absent friends' name was the only loud noise to come from them.

A Rattata was disturbed by their movements and scurried across their path, pausing only to chatter angrily at them for waking her.

"Damnit Luce, I don't think we're gonna find her. Not tonight at any rate." The man sighed heavily and pinched the bridge of his nose as if to stave off a headache.

He was a handsome human: Easily surpassing six feet in height. He was tanned, well built and moved with the ease of a giant cat despite the darkness. His dark brown hair was combed back into a horse-tail to reveal a face that was sensitive even though his blue eyes looked severe.

"We've gotta go back, you know it isn't safe here…" he trailed off, his voice was caught between a baritone and tenor, and currently sounded on edge as if he were battling internally with several emotions.

The girl at his side repressed a small shudder at their surroundings but carried on walking stubbornly. She was a scant few inches over five feet but she had a definite attitude to her. She was wearing typically punk gothic clothes, heavy black boots and enough earrings in her ears that they fairly jangled when she turned to challenge her friend.

"We're not going anywhere until we at least find a clue of where she is, Rhys!" she hissed, her spiky blond hair gave her the appearance of an enraged Pikachu.

"We won't find a clue, not with just two of us and by torch-light. We should get back to the village."

Lucinda looked as if she was swelling where she stood. She filled with indignant anger towards Rhys and appeared as if she was going to start a shouting match, before Rhys smoothly interrupted.

"Just for tonight Luce, Liana's uncle looked pretty bad when they told him she was missing. He'll need some sympathy. We can start the search again tomorrow 'kay?"

The girl visibly deflated and rubbed the back of her head tiredly, the harsh call of a Pokémon startled her into submitting, "Yeah, I guess… these torches won't last long and then we'll be royally fucked. Let's head back for tonight."

Reluctantly the pair turned back and started the trek back to the village. Lucinda's thoughts drifted back to yesterday afternoon…

Lucinda had rolled her eyes in exasperation toward the man who was currently trying, rather unsuccessfully, to scour a tree with the handle of a basket firmly clamped between his teeth.

"Rhys, for Mew's sake it's much too late to be picking fruit now. The sun has practically gone down!" she shouted up at him, her voice startling some roosting Pidgey and nearly causing the man to fall from his precarious position.

"Yeah well I wouldn't have to pick the fruit if Liana had bothered to show up for her shift!" came the muffled retort.

"Liana didn't show up for fruit-picking? She said she'd only be gone a few hours."

"Well you remind her of that then. Damn wench owes me for taking over her shift!"

Lucinda smirked at Rhys's complaints. She knew all too well that Rhys held a soft spot for both Liana and herself. No matter how much he whined at them he'd do almost anything for the pair. Even if it meant picking fruit!

There was a rustle, some colourful curses, and a shower of leaves and twigs as Rhys finally gave up trying to get the fruit and shimmied back down the tree with all the grace of a Snorlax trying ballet.

"C'mon Spider-man let's go find Liana," Lucinda chortled as Rhys fell the last few feet onto his rump "I can tell her about your retarded-Tediursa-in-a-tree impression!"

Rhys swore under his breath whilst rubbing his behind as he followed Lucinda towards Liana's hut.

It was there that they began to get a little concerned over their friends' disappearance. Sure Liana liked to duck out on menial chores now and then, but she was always back in the village before sunset.

They searched her small hut, the village hall, a few of their friend's huts, and the small tree Liana liked to sit under near the outskirts. Nothing, the girl wasn't there.

"Hey Stefan, have you seen Liana today?" Lucinda called over to one of the ostlers.

The older man was on good terms with Liana, they shared a common interest in nature and Liana often aided him with the Ponyta and Rapidash that the villagers owned.

"Cannae says I have lass, why d'ye ask?" he rubbed his straw-like hair and looked suspiciously at Lucinda.

"N-no reason, she's just given us the slip is all." Rhys answered for her and ushered the girl along, they didn't want to worry anyone just yet.

After another hour of searching Liana's favourite haunts the pair had finally given into the inevitable and told the village elders who in turn told Liana's uncle. Of course little was done and the worst was feared immediately…

This bought them back to now. Lucinda bit her lip and shook her head worriedly, "Liana where the hell have you got to?"
